Colors For Ventilations

Summary of Colors

The SmartMan colors are easy to understand. The real time feedback produces the colored bars each time you do something on the manikin. You always aim to produce bright green bars. As the colors move from left to right (from bright green to red) it is worse for the patient.

bright green  dark green  orange  red

VENTILATIONS - VERTICAL BARS (Inspiration Rate and Volume)

The same colors are used in rescue breaths and ventilations given in CPR as for chest compressions. When performing ventilations on a patient, you must provide the correct inspiration volume and give the patient that volume at the correct inspiration rate. This information is contained in the vertical bars. SmartMan will detect if air goes into the stomach but the bars will only display information related to what goes into the lungs.

You must also consider the time between each ventilation. This information is provided in the horizontal bars. See below for more information on interval.

v-brightgreen

Bright Green = INSPIRATION rate and volume was correct.

v-darkgr Dark Green = INSPIRATION rate was correct but the volume was too little or too much.
v-orange Orange = INSPIRATION was too fast; it took too short a time. v-red Red = INSPIRATION was too slow. It is to be delivered over a span of 1 second.
Volume marker The two horizontal lines on the screen show the target volume. The volume should be between 0.5l and 0.6l. A greater volume is a higher bar.

VENTILATIONS - HORIZONTAL BARS (Interval)
The horizontal colored Bars Indicate the Accuracy of the Interval between INSPIRATIONS.

The interval for Rescue Breaths is about 6 seconds from the start of one ventilation to the start of the next ventilation (performed at a rate of about 10 per minute).

For the ventilations performed during CPR, the second ventilation should be performed as soon as the air has expired from the previous ventilation. This is about 1 second from the start of the first ventilation to the start of the second ventilation.. TOP

Ventilation Interval Bright Green means the time from the start of one breath to the start of the next breath was correct.
Ventilation Interval Too Fast Orange means the interval between breaths was too short.
Ventilations Interval Too Slow Red means the interval between breaths was too long.

VENTILATIONS - SAMPLE FOR RESUCE BREATHES
Below is a sample from the SmartMan screen for 1 minute of rescue breathing. You can tell at a glance that this is a very good set of ventilations. Most of the vertical bar graphs are bright green. This means the inspirations were given at the correct rate and at the correct volume. The 4 in dark green were not at the correct volume.

All of the horizontal bars are bright green. This means that the timing between breaths was correct. TOP

Rescue Breathing

Close Up of a section of the above graph

When the 1 minute cycle has finished, SmartMan will provide a screen showing the total performance. It will also add 2 sets of numbers for each breath.

  1. The top number is the exact time of the inspiration; ie the time that the air was being pushed into the lungs. The target time for this is 1.0 seconds. In the close up cutaway shown below, inspiration times were .89, .96, .94, .88, .9, .97. of a second. All were close enough to show as bright green on the horizontal line.
  2. The lower number is the exact interval from the start of 1 breath until the start of the next breath. The target time for this is 6.0 seconds. In the close up cutaway shown below, inspiration interval times were 5.1, 5.3, 5.2, 5.4 5.5. All could have been longer but were acceptable.
  3. The volume of the inspiration is indicated by the vertical lines on the screen. Below we see that 2 of the inspirations volumes are dark green. This is because the volume fell just short of the green lines on the screen. TOP
