The Pop Up

The manikin has a black popup at the base of its torso. Push the plastic clip in and it will come up as it is spring loaded.

Shutter to Cover or Reveal Panel Markings
The front and back of the popup have markings that provide a rough guide as to how well your compressions or ventilations are being performed. You may use these guides to calibrate the digital component.

On the front of the popup there is a sliding black panel. You can pull this to the top to obscure the analogue display or push it down to reveal the display.

USB Plug on side of Pop Up
On one side of the popup there is USB connection. This is how the manikin is connected to the computer.

The Manikin must be connected to the computer via a USB cable. Connect the USB Cable from to the PC making sure that it is firmly in place. The rectangular end goes into the popup panel and the flat end into the PC.

Serial Number For Panel
The panel has a serial number on the side opposite to where the USB cable enters the popup. This serial number can be used to calibrate the manikin to the factory settings. You must be connected to the internet to use this feature.

Start the Software
After you have installed the program, click on the SmartMan icon on the desktop or in the start menu.

Login: You must create a login name. This can be a short name or a nick name. You will use this name each time you go into the program. If you already have a login you simply click on your login name, enter the password, and then click enter.

If you enter an incorrect password, the program will wait for you to correct it. use the back space key and retype your password.

Go here for detailed information on login and password procedures.

Password: Because every person’s scores are private, when a person registers he or she must give their login name a password. This must be at least six letters or numbers long and cannot have any spaces.

When you have typed your password, click continue. You will be asked to type your password a second time if you are creating the login.

NOTE: both the ‘Log In’ and ‘Password’ are case sensitive.

Go here for detailed information on login and password procedures.

Connection Verification: SmartMan will now check the connection to the manikin.

Connection Verification: SmartMan will now check the connection to the manikin.

Good Connection - If the connection via the USB cable is okay, you will see the SmartMan Main Menu.

Bad Connection – If the connection cannot be established, a popup window will explain that an error has occurred. When you click the continue button you will be taken back to the login stage.

Check that all cables are correctly plugged in. Then login in again. If you get the same error, try a different USB cable. top

Main Menu

Depending on whether you have SmartMan or Airway SmartMan, there are three or four options under the Skills Menu.

All buttons must be white in order to be active. If some buttons are gray, then some other action must be taken before they become white.

To use the Menus, the person logged in MUST be registered. In the example below, the “register” Button is not available because the person has already registered. All of the other options are available. For detailed information on registering a single person, a group of people or a large group of people, click here.

SmartMan from v5.3 onwards automatically calibrates each time you go back to the Main Menu. You can force it to re-calibrate by pressing the F5 Button. If it finds a reading outside of what it expects, a message window will pop up. For example if the lungs are not quite empty it will ask you to press on the chest a couple of times to bring the readings into the correct range.

If you wish you can calibrate the manually calibrate the manikin. See the user manual for details.

Main Menu
If the current person who is logged in has registered and if the manikin has been calibrated, it is now ready to be used. You can tell this because the items in the Skills Menu are now a bright white. Move your cursor over the type of skills you wish to perform.

SKILLS MENU
This is where you select which skills to practice. When you click on one of the selections a drop down menu will give you further options.

ACTIONS MENU

This is for registering, changing the person who is logged in, looking at previous results, checking for Updates, and Calibrating SmartMan.

INTERNET ACCESS
Check this box if you don’t have an Internet connection – this saves time between practices & tests as the program does not need to try accessing the SmartMan server to lodge results.

CONTENT MENU

This explains to a new user how to perform some of the basic skills. top

Register A User

When you start SmartMan you must create a login with a password.
Then you need to register. Every person must register to use SmartMan. You must be connected to the internet to register.

From the Main Menu, click on the "Register" button. Fill in the form and submit it.

When you have successfully registered you will receive a Student Number. Keep a note of this number as it allows you full access to all of the SmartMan sections. It will also be sent to the email address which you used.

NOTE: Versions 3.7 and after provides a much simpler and quicker way to register and to use the template.

We suggest that you upgrade the software on your machines to take advantage of these new features.

If you are running a version before 3.7 go here.

Register Using the Template
There are 2 different systems for setting up a template. If you are using a version before version 3.7
go here. If you are using the current version (Version 3.7 and later) continue below. You will see the following form which only has 4 fields which you must fill in.
registration form

At the bottom of the page there are 2 buttons.

template-buttons

The "Save To Template" Button will save any information which is filled in, into a template.

When another person comes in to register, they will be able to fill in the information you have saved in that template by pressing the "Read From Template" button.

Suggestion: Fill in the key code, then press the "Save as template" button.
When anyone registers, they start by pressing the "Read from Template" button. That will put the key code in for them.

The Key Code

When a proper key code has been entered, you will see (verified) written after it.

If that does not appear, re-enter the key code.

When the form is complete, continue button as below:

Register Using Bulk Registration
This is a process designed to help those people who have a large number of people to register. We are suggesting that if you have more than 25 you might want to try this system.

You download the Excel template, (template is here) complete all of the information required and then send that completed template back to us. We process the file, upload the registration and then send back a zip file to you. You then unzip the file and copy the files into the records directory on the computers you will use with SmartMan.

Situation 1: Depending on your situation, you might not be certain which students are going to be using which computers with SmartMan. In this case it is better to put all of the files onto all of the computers being used. That way, no matter which one they go to, their login will be there.

Situation 2: You may be using different computers with different groups or different classes. In this case, only copy the specific files onto the machines where that group is going to use SmartMan. top

Download the Excel template.

Complete all of the fields in the template for every person.

Send us the file and we do the registrations for you.

We send the file back to you and you copy them onto your computers.

Calibrate the manikin

Calibrating is the process of making sure that the manikin is providing accurate readings. Accurate Calibration is important to the proper recording of all skills. If a manikin is not calibrated with the computer you cannot perform any practice or skills. There are several verification procedures that SmartMan undertakes to make certain that readings are within acceptable levels of accuracy. If you make a mistake, you can re-do that step.

To calibrate, click the "Calibrate Manikin" button around the middle of the screen. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Auto Calibrate
SmartMan will self calibrate for chest compressions and ventilations. It will provide an on screen error if the readings are outside of what is expected.

You can force an auto calibrate from the Main Menu. Simple press F5.

Calibrate Via Internet
If you select the Calibrate option from the Menu, the option “Calibrate via internet” will make the program search on the internet for the factory calibration file for your particular SmartMan. You will be asked to enter the panel number. The panel number is on the side of the popup instrument panel on the side opposite to where the USB cable connects.

If your internet connection is poor or if you do not have permission to write a file from the internet onto your hard drive you will see an error report.

Manually Calibrate
When you select this option, you will perform several tasks to verify how deeply the chest is being compressed and what volume is being put into the lungs.

You will have to repeat the action several times so that the software can confirm the readings. Accuracy and not speed is what is required during calibration

First you calibrate for compressions and then you calibrate for ventilations. To download detailed instructions click the link.

Solve issues related to calibrating
When you calibrate you need to watch the movement of the bar on the popup. When calibrating, you are setting the accuracy of the device. When calibrating depths and volumes SmartMan does not record how fast or slow you perform. It will ONLY record the maximum you produce.

When you are calibrating the volume of the ventilations, because of the sensitivity of the device, it is possible to get the two scores within the allowed tolerance but when SmartMan computes the performance with expected (acceptable) ranges, it finds that you are too far out of the expected range. It will ask you to re-calibrate.

Suggestions To Get Calibration Correct: Pick a spot on the back panel and try to get the bar to the same spot each time. You must be exact!

Accuracy of the value: To set the value you must produce the same value (or very nearly so) for compressions 3 in a row. For ventilations you have to do 4 ventilations. The first one is for you to test for feel and a good seal and it is the last three that count for the calibration. If you make a mistake, simply go through the attempts again. Then click continue and try again.

Maximum value: Pick a spot on the back panel which is as close to the correct value as possible. Try to get the bar to the same spot each time. Take your time. Speed does not count here.

Minimum value: Pick a spot on the back panel which is as close to the correct value as possible. Try to get the bar to the same spot each time. Take your time. Speed does not count here. top

Select a Skill

At the Main Menu, select a skill to practice. If you have registered and if the manikin has been calibrated, then you will be able to make a selection from the Actions Menu. To get started, select Compressions. Then select, 30 Compressions PRACTICE. Select Intermediate. Press the space bar to tell the manikin to get ready. It will begin to display as soon as you press the chest the first time.

For this chest compressions practice, perform 30 chest compression, then wait for 4 seconds while the computer pretends to give the victim the 4 ventilations. If your sound is turned up on your computer you will hear a count down, one and two and three and four. Then perform 30 more chest compressions. At the end of that you will see your results. top
